How Phoenix’s New Bulk Trash Appointments Work

Staring at a garage full of stuff and wondering how to get it to the curb the right way? You’re not alone. Phoenix switched to appointment-based bulk trash pickups, and the new rules can feel like a lot when you’re prepping a home to sell or settling in after a move. This guide walks you through how the system works, what you can put out, and smart options if you have more than one load. Let’s dive in.

What changed in Phoenix

Phoenix replaced its old quarterly bulk-trash schedule with a by-appointment system announced in fall 2024. You now need a confirmed appointment before placing items at the curb. Starting January 2025, most households can schedule up to four pickups per year. For the 2024 rollout, the city limited customers to one appointment. You can read the city’s overview in the Public Works newsroom announcement about the new bulk trash program.

Why the switch? The city says appointments give you more flexibility, reduce illegal dumping, and help crews work more efficiently. The city also standardized placement so most piles go at the front of the property rather than in alleys. Details live on the city’s bulk trash pickup page.

How to schedule your pickup

Schedule online or by phone

  • Use the city’s online scheduling portal from the bulk trash pickup page, or call 602-262-6251.
  • Appointments are typically available within weeks and can be set up to six months in advance.

Timing rules that matter

  • Book your appointment at least 3 business days before your desired date.
  • After your appointment is confirmed, place items out no earlier than seven days before pickup. Setting items out too early is a city violation.
  • Collections start around 6:00 a.m. Place items by 5:30 a.m. the morning of your pickup.

Cancel or reschedule

  • Call 602-262-6251 at least three business days before your appointment to cancel without it counting toward your annual limit.

What you can put out

Volume limits

  • Limit each appointment to 10 cubic yards of material (about 17 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft). If you have more, schedule another appointment or use a transfer station.

Placement rules

  • Create one pile at the front edge of your property, within 5 feet of the curb or street edge, and parallel to the curb.
  • Keep piles at least 5 feet from fixed objects and avoid placing items on meters or utility boxes.
  • Do not place piles in alleys unless the city instructs your area to do so. See full placement guidance on the city’s bulk trash page.

Items not accepted

  • No loose household trash or loose yard waste such as unbagged leaves or grass.
  • No construction debris like bricks, concrete, dirt, roofing tiles, or large auto parts.
  • No tires or sheet glass such as windows and shower doors.
  • Appliances with refrigerant have special rules. Community piles that mix multiple households’ materials are discouraged. Review the city’s complete list on the bulk trash page.

Holiday blackout periods

  • The city blocks appointments on certain holidays and the seven days after them. Expect blackout periods around Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Check the city newsroom update for timing notes before you schedule.

Appliances and hazardous waste

Refrigerators and AC units

  • Appliances with refrigerant require special handling. Phoenix allows one free drop-off per year for a refrigerant appliance at a transfer station. Additional refrigerant appliances and curbside pickups may include fees billed to your city services account. See current rules and rates on the city’s Appliance Recycling page.

Household hazardous waste (HHW)

  • Paints, oils, batteries, pool chemicals, and similar items are not accepted in bulk trash. The city provides separate HHW options listed on the bulk trash page.

Too much for one pickup? Your options

  • Schedule another appointment. Each appointment allows another 10 cubic yards, up to your annual limit.
  • Use a transfer station. Phoenix residents can drop up to 1 ton per month at no cost with a photo ID and a current city services bill. Over 1 ton, standard gate rates apply. Locations and hours are on the city’s Transfer Stations page.
  • Hire a licensed hauler. Private junk-removal services can handle large or ineligible items on your timeline. Confirm the vendor is reputable and follows legal disposal practices.

Tips for sellers and buyers

If you’re selling

  • Count your volume. Ten cubic yards is roughly a small bedroom of material. If you expect more, book two appointments.
  • Separate special items early. Set aside refrigerators, AC units, tires, paint, and electronics for the correct drop-off or fee-based pickup.
  • Plan around blackout dates. Avoid having piles out during holiday restricted periods.
  • Keep proof of residency ready if you plan to self-haul to a transfer station.

If you’re buying or moving in

  • Book ahead if you can. Check the portal soon after closing so your pickup aligns with your move timeline.
  • Do not place items curbside without a confirmed appointment. It can trigger enforcement.
  • If your city services bill isn’t in your name yet, contact Public Works for guidance on transfer station use and ID requirements.
